Op z'n Elburgs

Henk van den Hoorn
A true Elburger and a social, passionate volunteer
Volunteers are the glue that holds society together, and that may be even more true for Elburg. How come? Elburgers love their town and have a big social heart. And everyone knows each other, that goes back generations. ‘Whose are you one of’, is a frequently heard remark in Elburg.
Henk van den Hoorn is one of those volunteers who is involved in everything. He works as a city guide, is treasurer at the fish auction, market master during the summer markets, helps out at the Botterwerf and when they call him for a job, he is already at the front door.
He comes from a fishing family. Until the mid-1950s, fishing was the main source of income for Elburg. Henk’s grandfather was a fisherman on the Zuiderzee. After the draining and reclamation of the Zuiderzee, that ceased to exist, but fish remained an important part of Elburg. Smoking and selling eel and salmon is in the DNA of the people of Elburg.
If you are looking for Henk, look at the old harbour. That is really his favourite spot. Chatting with some friends or just enjoying the view of the botterwerf. That is when he is in his element.
The city walks with Henk are always a success. With a juicy story and a joke he introduces you to the history of our unique fortress. Also book a city walk? Look at www.bezoek-elburg and make a reservation.
