In 1916 the municipal Fish Auction was opened at the harbour of Elburg. From now on supply and demand and the competition between the merchants would determine the prices of the fish. The Fish Auction functioned until 1957. In that year, the Eastern Flevoland polder fell dry, which closed Elburg from the open water. The building of the municipal Fish Auction was publicly sold in 1958.
A number of enthusiastic volunteers bought the building in 1985. The old Fish Auction was restored with great effort and then rebuilt on the Havenkade in Elburg. Since 1987, the former Fish Auction has harboured a small fishing museum. The eye-catcher is the restored auction clock. In addition, many fishing attributes remind us of Elburg's fishing history. The former Fish Auction is open to the public in July and August. Attendants are present from Tuesday afternoon to Saturday afternoon (2 pm - 5 pm) to show the visitors around.
It is also possible for groups to visit the former Fish Auction by appointment.
